              Dog Beds & Bedding
Dog Beds & Bedding Dog beds come in a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. It is important that your dog has a bed they can sleep in comfortably. Most dogs have health issues as they gain an older age and being trained for a dog bed in the early years can help them later on. When you search for a dog bed there are certain aspects that you should keep in mind with the variety you have to choose from. First it is important that the bed fit the dog. Dogs just like humans need a good nights sleep. This means that you may have to spend a little to make then comfortable and happy, but in the end it will be well worth the effort. You should look for dog beds that are sturdy, washable, and above all comfortable. You will also find that among the dog bed choices you can find chew proof styles and "Permafresh" antibacterial coverings that will be everything you need. Some of the dog beds offer a design that allows air to flow beneath the bed while the dog is sleeping. This means that they will be more comfortable in both cool and warm climates. Dogs have a lot of fur that can become overheated in the wrong style of bed. The air that can flow through some of the beds will help them sleep more comfortably based on the air in the room. There are also different beds such as cushions, donut shaped beds, and those that can be used in a car or on a couch. Dogs tend to find places in a home where they are most comfortable and can get the attention they wish to have. If you have a dog bed it should be placed in your bedroom or living room to offer the dog what they seek. In some cases people don’t like to have their dogs on the beds or other furniture. With a dog bed you can prevent these issues from happening.
              Dog Behaviour Management
Dog Behaviour Management We offer a selection of humane and effective products which may help as a single approach towards changing undesirable/negative behaviours into positive ones. There are numerous behaviour management products on the market so please consider your pets needs carefully. If a training device is not effective immediately, discontinue its use, and seek additional advice since continuing to reprimand the pet without the behavior changing is counterproductive and may create fear, anxiety and even more undesireable behaviours. Leashes, harnesses, and muzzles may be needed to keep your pet under control, especially when outdoors. A cage, excercise pen and other containment systems provides a safe comfortable home for the dog when supervision is unavailable. Alternately, door gates can be used to keep pets away from potential problem areas (See our Accessories Category). Since dogs (especially puppies), are strongly motivated to chew, particulary when they are bored and not engaged, it is adventageous to provide a variety of chew toys. A chew toy can also help maintain good dental health. In fact, many dental foods and dental products make excellent chew toys while providing better dental health. Find a few products that are safe, durable and that appeal to your pet. A few representative products of each type are listed here as examples - Kong®, Kong® Biscuit Ball, Dental Kong®, Nylabone, Buster Cube, Tricky Treats, Twist 'N' Treat. Interactive toys provide an opportunity for social play. The Boomer Ball, Water Kong, and a variety of flying disks have been designed for interactive play with dogs. Browse through our TOYS, COLLARS/MUZZLES/LEASHES category, you will be surprised by the choice of quality products available.
              Dog Bowls
Dog Bowls If you're looking for a dog bowl, either for food or water, for your dog, you're in luck! Dog bowls are available in many colors, materials, and styles. Finding the dog bowl that's right for your dog should be easy if you stop to consider a few factors before you shop - easy to clean, dishwasher safe, tip or spill proof, durable, safe and size. Heavy stainless steel dog bowls with a rubber bottom and tapered sides are great choices. This type of bowl has some weight and a rubber bottom to avoid your pet being able to push it all over the floor or ground. The tapered sides encourage tip resistance. Stainless steel is durable, easy to wash, dishwasher safe, and can not be chewed or broken. It should also be big enough to could at least one full days worth of water for the size of your dog. Avoid light-weight plastic dog bowls that can be chewed, moved, or thrown around. Avoid lightweight glass and pottery bowls that can be broken. Elevated feeders may be more “comfortable” for your pet as he ages. They are also are easier to sweep around and clean under which is especially usefully for messy eaters. Narrow and deep feeders are ideal if you have a long-eared dog. This design allows your dog to drink without getting his ears in the water. Automatic dog feeders offer controlled portions in a frequency that you choose. Most are battery operated. These are generally not recommended for puppies. Bowl holders are good to prevent bowls from skidding or sliding around the floor. To choose the right size, consider that dogs drink approximately up to 25 ml per pound per day. That comes out to be a little less than an ounce per pound. So if you have a 10 pound dog, make sure your bowl holds at least 10 ounces. If you have a 30 pound dog, make sure it holds at least 30 ounces or about a litre.
              Dog Carriers/Cage Residence
Dog Carriers/Cage Residence Dog crates are becoming increasingly popular in Britain as they have some major benefits for you and your dog. Keeping your pet safe when unsupervised, keeping your property safe from being chewed or preventing your carpets being soiled. Ensure your pets safety by choosing a cage which has rounded edges so your pet wil not be injured by sharp edges, and one with multi access doors to let them out. The up and over door is very useful as it folds flat onto the roof of the cage, enabling the cage to be used as a den without the inconvenience of having a side door open. By adding a cage cover your dog may find this the ideal place to sleep in. The type of carrier you have for your dog may greatly affect his desire to get into it and his comfort while traveling. Dogs unhappy about their surroundings in a car or other moving vehicle may howl, bark, experience stress and be generally miserable. The type of carrier also may affect how easily you are able to transport your dog. When purchasing a carrier, give careful consideration to your needs and those of your dog. One of the most important considerations is the size of the carrier. Is it large enough for your dog?
              Dog Coats

To measure your dog for their coat all you need to do is measure along your dogs back from their neck (where their collar sits) to the base of their tail. Our outstanding range of dog coats are carefully selected for Quality, Style, Durability and Warmth.

              Dog Food (Dry)
Dog Food (Dry) Most store-bought dog food comes in either a dry form, also known as kibble, or a wet canned form. Dry food contains 6-10% moisture by volume, as compared to up to 78% in canned food. Semi-moist foods have a moisture content of 25-35%. Pet owners often prefer dry food for reasons of convenience and price. Besides the lower price, dry pet food can also be left out for the animal to eat at will over the course of several days; whereas canned food spoils or becomes unappetizing after several hours. On the other hand, canned food has a longer shelf life than dry food. Canned food can also contain more protein and fat than dry dog food. Many dry foods can be less expensive, per pound, than their canned (wet) or semi-moist counterparts, and are less likely to spoil than an open can. Pellets of dry dog food, called kibble, are produced by one of two methods, extrusion and baking. During the extrusion process, cut dough or a mixture of raw materials is fed into an expander, while pressurized steam or hot water is added. When removed from the high pressure that results, the pellets puff up like popcorn. The resultant kibble is allowed to dry, then sprayed with vitamins, fats and oils, or any other ingredients that are not heat-tolerant. If extruded kibble is exposed to air for too long or not properly stored, the fats and oils added after cooking can become rancid, and vitamins and minerals in the food may be destroyed by heat during storage or shipping.
              Dog Food (Gluten Free)
Dog Food (Gluten Free) Protein provides the basic building blocks for any diet that is meant to generate strong, lean muscle. But too many pet foods are loaded down with gluten, which adds heaviness and bulk that is harder on the digestive system but does not convert into naturally useful proteins. Rather than tax the digestion of a dog, many educated pet owners are instead switching from ordinary dog food to special gluten free dog food. It is easier for the dog to digest it is also better for the animal's overall health. Reputable brands of gluten free dog food provide all the necessary and essential amino acids, proteins, and other key ingredients that go into a balanced and nutritious doggy diet - without the potential harmful and physically taxing levels of unwanted gluten found in inferior dog foods. These healthier dog foods might use, for example, healthy ingredients such as sunflower oil, fish, and fish meal that is rich in beneficial omega three fatty acids. Other main ingredients in better dog foods are chicken and lamb, which can be complimented by flaxseed, alfalfa meal, and various herbs such as rosemary. Gluten is the elastic part of the wheat or other type of grain that feels thick and starchy. Many animals are sensitive to it, and because it is rather gummy in its texture gluten can be much harder to break down and successfully digest within the body. Gluten is actually commonly used as a powerful binder and thickener by manufacturers of products like soups and artificial cheeses. So some people say that eating it is like eating a paste or adhesive, and that has obvious drawbacks for your dog. Some canines also suffer from diseases like celiac disease, and for those dogs gluten in any form can be toxic, creating an adverse reaction within the digestive tract. Most of the major brands produce a gluten-free range - Applaws, Arden Grange, Autarky, Bozita, HiLife, Wafcol, Fish4Dogs, Purina and Davies, to name but a few. We stock a complete gluten-free range so if you can't find the one you want, we can source it for you.
              Dog Food (Puppy)
Dog Food (Puppy) Manufactured puppy foods are designed to provide complete nutrition, without the bulk. Puppy formulas contain good levels of high quality protein to support healthy tissue and organ development, and higher levels of essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, zinc and iron, as well as vitamin D to help build strong bones and teeth. Puppies also have smaller mouths than adult dogs, so the smaller bite-sized kibbles in most manufactured puppy foods make it easier to chew and release all the essential nutrients. Puppies have small stomachs but large appetites, so feed them small amounts on a frequent basis depending on their age: 2-3 months: four meals a day; 4-6 months: two to three meals a day; over 6 months: two meals a day. Serve food at room temperature to ensure your puppy can taste and smell it properly. Despite those pleading, puppy dog eyes, try to avoid feeding table scraps and titbits. To do so will upset your puppy's nutritional balance, and can often be dangerous. Raw meat, in particular, can be infected with bacteria, and despite tasting so good, chocolate is a toxic to their system and should always be avoided.
              Dog Food (Wet)
Dog Food (Wet) Wet or canned dog food is significantly higher in moisture than dry or semi-moist food. Because the food is sterilized after being canned (sometimes it is also cooked in the can), it is often easier to ensure the sterility of wet food. A given wet food will often be higher in protein or fat when compared to a similar kibble on a dry matter basis (a measure which ignores moisture). Grain gluten and other protein gels may be used in wet dog food to create artificial meaty chunks, which look like real meat.
              Dog Grooming & Bath
Dog Grooming & Bath Grooming is one of your dogs basic needs - just like people, dogs need grooming to look and feel their best. A dog's grooming needs depend on the breed and type/length of hair. Most dogs enjoy being brushed; regradeless of hair type, you can brush your dog daily. If your dog has a skin, nail or ear condition please follow your veterinarian's instructions. Bathtime isn't generally a fun time for a dog or their owners - most dogs should be bathed monthly, but bathing as often as once a week isn't considered harmful. Always use a soap-free shampoo intended for dogs. Nail trims are often detested by dogs and owners alike - dogs will often develop an aversion to nail trimming once they experience pain form it. The best way to avoid this is to learn how to trim nails correctly and use the correct implements.
              Dog Health
Dog Health Adult worms are rarely seen so you cannot tell if your dog has worms just by looking. The only way to know is by microscopic examination of the faeces to detect the eggs. Roundworms may cause illness in humans and dogs. Puppies are infected by their mother; the worms live in the gut and shed eggs in the faeces (excrement). Soil contaminated by faeces becomes a source of infection for both people and dogs. Puppies need worming fortnightly until 12-14 weeks old. Adult dogs need worming at least four times yearly, or more frequently if there are young children or invalids in the household. Ask your vet's advice. Entire females also need worming when they are pregnant, feeding pups or 30 days after a season. Most dogs get fleas at some point, and they are most common in summertime. They can be hard to spot as they spend little time actually on the dog. Fleas and flea eggs can survive outdoors in summer. Regular treatment is recommended, especially for an itchy animal. A single application of any treatment is not enough for effective control – treatment usually needs to be repeated monthly. Regular grooming is essential for all dogs, even short-coated ones. Weekly grooming reduces hair-shedding in the house. Teeth are important and, just like people, animals benefit from regular dental care. Bad teeth heavily coated in plaque (containing bacteria) can spoil your dog’s appetite and may spread infection elsewhere in the body. Dirty teeth develop infections at the gum line and cause a foul smell. The gums recede and the teeth can loosen. Daily brushing will prevent these problems. Other ways of trying to reduce plaque formation are less effective. A special diet is one possibility. It is often said that dried foods and biscuits are good for the teeth (although this view would surprise our own dentist!). Few have been studied to see if they really reduce plaque long-term. There are, however, one or two types of dried food available through your vet where studies have shown effectiveness in plaque reduction. Some have a higher fibre content, which has a brushing action on the teeth as they are chewed. Others create an antibacterial coating on the teeth, which slows the accumulation of plaque. Ask your vet about the best option for your dog. Dental chews may be helpful. Select something that is tough and chewy – avoid things that are hard as there is a risk they will damage the teeth. Chunks of raw vegetables are also good for your dog’s teeth. Daily brushing remains the best solution.
              Dog Toys
Dog Toys A dog bone is either a real or a manufactured toy bone that makes a good dog toy. Some dogs like to bury dog bones in the yard, so they can dig it up and chew on it later. Others want to chew it and carry it around. Dog bones also help getting plaque off of the dog's teeth. Latex and rubber dog toys are great for dog entertainment. It helps for those aggressive chewers to have a safe way to satisfy their biting instinct. Yet at the same time it helps keep dogs gums and teeth clean and healthy. In general hard rubber bones and other latex dog toys helps improve dogs overall oral hygiene. Some toys can serve multiple functions for dogs to interact with, combining common play behaviors into a single toy. Specialist companies such as Happy Pet, Pet Brands and Kong, produce toys that can adapt to other toys and objects, and be combined by the dog owner to create new toys for dogs to play with. Whereas a hard ball is not well-suited for chewing, and a plush toy is difficult to throw, wrapping the ball in a plush exterior creates a toy that can be thrown and chewed on. Such toys may provide more entertainment value for dogs and their owners. Balls of all shapes and sizes are great in keeping your dog active and fit - a great way to play and exercise your dog at the same time.
              Dog Treats
Dog Treats Treats are much tastier than a postie's trouser leg! Treats are wholesome and nutritious; they help to teach play, combat boredom, help to clean teeth, freshen breath and reduce gum disease. Treats are the perfect way to show your affection - and all that tail wagging shows the feeling is mutual! The choice is extensive - a treat for every palette. Arden Grange, Wafcol, Fish 4Dogs, Bozita and Davies all offer gluten-free treats. Wafcol treats are both gluten-free and red meat free which are lean on fat. Arden Grange produce a healthy treat which is all natural (free from artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives) as well as hypoallergenic, gluten-free and soya-free. Bakers and Pedigree both offer a wide selection of tasty, fun treats your pet will love. Pedigree Dentastix promote good dental healthcare, and Pedigree Jointcare helps with those achey bones.
