Fish Bowls/TanksFish Bowls/Tanks
Most aquaria consist of glass panes bonded together by silicone, with plastic frames that are attached to the upper and lower edges for decoration. The glass aquarium is standard for sizes up to about 1000 litres (250 gal). However, glass is brittle and has very little give before fracturing, though generally the sealant fails first. Aquaria come in a variety of shapes such as cuboid, hexagonal, angled to fit in a corner (L-shaped), bow-front (the front side curves outwards). Fish bowls are generally either plastic or glass, either spherical or some other round configuration. Acrylic aquaria are also available and are the primary competitor with glass. Acrylic aquariums are stronger than glass, and much lighter. Acrylic-soluble cements are used to directly fuse acrylic together (as opposed to simply sealing the seam). Acrylic allows for the formation of unusual shapes, such as hexagonal. Compared to glass, acrylics are easy to scratch; but it is possible to polish out scratches in acrylic, unlike glass. Laminated glass might be used, which combines the advantages of both glass and acrylic.
Fish FoodFish Food
Fish food is plant or animal material intended for consumption by pet fish kept in aquariums or ponds. Fish foods normally contain macro nutrients, trace elements and vitamins necessary to keep captive fish in good health. Approximately 80% of fishkeeping hobbyists feed their fish exclusively prepared foods that most commonly are produced in flake, pellet or tablet form. Pelleted forms, some of which sink rapidly, are often used for larger fish or bottom feeding species such as loaches or catfish. Flake food is a type of proprietary or artificially manufactured fish food consumed by a wide variety of tropical and saltwater fish and invertebrates. It is ideally suited to top dwellers and mid-water fish though numerous bottom dwelling species consume flake food once it has settled on the bottom. Flake food is baked to remove moisture and create the flaking, thus allowing for a longer shelf life. Generally the more moisture a particular example of fish food contains, the more readily it will deteriorate in quality. Dry foods is also available as pellets, sticks, tablets, granules, and wafers, manufactured to float or sink, depending on the species they are designed to feed.
Fish Maintenance/HealthFish Maintenance/Health
You have your fish tank up and running but you're noticing that it's starting to look a little dirty. Or, you notice that you need to top off some evaporated water. This is the time for some routine aquarium care. Fish tank maintenance can sometimes be a bother for hobbyists but it doesn't have to be that way. Develop a schedule for carrying out these aquarium maintenance tasks and it will make this hobby more enjoyable. Staying on top of those water changes should increase the health of your fish and make your tank look nicer. It's important to note that you don't need to completely break down the tank everytime you have to "clean your tank". Most of the time you will just need to perform a partial water change (20 percent or so) with a good gravel vacuuming and maybe scrape a little algae off the front viewing panel. If you have a major algae problem then something isn't quite right. You may be feeding too much, your tank may be overstocked, you're not performing frequent enough water changes, you're feeding the wrong types of foods (or a combination of the above). With any fish, coldwater or tropical, having enough space to live happily is vital and over stocked tanks are common. With all fish, living with bullies is stressful enough, without being cramped up together in a small tank. So to ensure you create a happy community in your tank always ask advice before purchasing any new fish to check everyone will get on. There are no exact rules to how many fish you can fit into one tank but following this guide can be useful, but remember, always take into account how big your fish will grow. Coldwater fish: 0.5cm of fish per litre of water; Tropical fish: 1cm of fish per litre water.

Fish PondsFish Ponds
A fish pond is one of the most delightful additions that anyone can make to their garden. When creating such a feature, keep in mind that one is actually creating a small ecosystem. The pond fish will need adequate room in which to move, will need a place to hide below the freeze line when winter comes and, depending on which type of pond fish one selects, one will have to adapt their selection of plants to accommodate their finned friends. Fish ponds will need to be kept clean. Some of this will be accomplished by the addition of various chemicals, such as dechlorinators and some of it accomplished via natural means. Adding aquatic plants, for example, helps keep the pond water fresh. These plants consume the nutrients required by algae and help keep the water free of this nasty, odorous type of growth.
